This book, #6 in the Shadowlands series, continues the story arc started in the previous book, Make Me, Sir. Wanting to infiltrate the organization that traffics in women, Master Raoul helps the FBI by going undercover. Instead of following the plan, he recognizes Kim, and buys her.

In order to further the FBI’s plan, Raoul takes on the task of helping Kim regain her strength. Working with the damaged women brings out his protective side, and together they walk Kim back to health.

Book five of the Shadowlands series starts a multibook arc, with a very dark theme: sexual slavery. Someone is targeting submissives, and the FBI asks Master Z to help. One of their employees, Gabi, fits the profile of the women that are being kidnapped. She has a mild background in BDSM and is willing to be bait. Master Marcus is the trainee coordinator, so he has the most contact with Gabi. He can’t figure her out, but does his best to comply with Z’s request to take her on. She wavers back and forth between sweet submissive and brat, but doesn’t seem to really enjoy her brattishness. Of course, she is trying to attract the kidnappers, but she can’t say so.

The tension in this book really ratches up as gentlemanly Marcus tries to cope with his growing attraction to the sub and his puzzlement at her inconsistent behavior. Things come to a head when Gabi is taken.

I really enjoyed this book as the stakes got higher and higher for Marcus and Gabi. One Cherise’s best.

This is book #4 in the Masters of Shadowlands series.

Andrea had a rough bringing up on the streets of Tampa. She had to be tougher than the boys she ran with on the street. She knows she’s submissive, but it will take a strong Dom to bring that out in her.

When a friend calls in some markers, she’s admitted to the trainee program at the Shadowlands, and meets her match. Dom Cullen is furious at being saddled with a new trainee, but grudgingly takes her on. Gradually, he comes to care for this woman whose tough exterior hides a tender heart.

Andrea responds to the Dom, until she finds out he is a cop. With her background, loving a cop isn’t in the cards. When she is unjustly accused of stealing money, she abandons her membership in the club and her growing relationship with Cullen.

This is one of the best in the series. Beth is terribly scarred, physically and mentally, by a sadistic husband. She is a true submissive, but afraid to let down her guard completely. She chooses inexperienced doms who won’t challenge her, so she doesn’t find the freedom she is looking for.

Master Z threatens to cancel her membership unless she agrees to partner with an experienced dom who can give her what she needs.

Master Nolan agrees to take her on with one stipulation: that she never lie to him. Beth agrees, but withholds the fact that she is still married.

This is the second book in the Shadowlands series, and Sinclair seems more comfortable with her characters. Kari is a schoolteacher, raised by nuns, and not sure Shadowlands is the right place for her. Her boyfriend, an inexperienced Dom, is a real douchebag. Kari is ready to leave when Master Z offers her the opportunity to work with an experienced Dom. She agrees.

Master Dan is still grieving the death of his wife three years ago, and has never played with a Sub more than once. He agrees to take Kari and finds himself drawn to her sweetness, innocence and inexperience.

Watching these two characters work through their problems together was a real treat.

Club Shadowlands

Club Shadowlands (Masters of the Shadowlands Series Book 1) by [Sinclair, Cherise]

Every couple of years, usually around the holidays, I feel the need for a comfort read and turn to Cherise Sinclair. Usually I just read the Shadowlands books, but this year I determined to read them all. And I did. Shadowlands, Dark Haven, Mountain Masters, Shifters, and a SF book.

This is where it all started for me. A dark and stormy night, a deserted road, and Jessica’s car in a ditch. Only one set of light visible, a private club where she takes shelter. She signs the membership papers without reading them (bad move, Jessica) and finds herself inside a private BDSM club.

Lucky for her, Master Z is honorable and honest, not to mention protective to a fault. Jessica stumbles around, making a fool out of herself, but Master Z keeps a close eye on her to prevent any permanent damage.

Later, when she returns to real life, she just can’t get that sexy man out of her mind. Neither could I. You always remember your first.

The Duke and the Domina

Oh, boy, did this book ever push my buttons. It had three elements I love: historical romance, time-slip, and light BDSM. Poor Dominatrix Lulu is in the middle of a scene with a client, when she slips and hits her head. When she comes to, she’s exchanged bodies with a Victorian miss, engaged to a duke. We never learn what happened to the Victorian miss, and we don’t care. We are so caught up with Lulu’s relationship with Grayson, the Duke of Warrick.

Fortunately for Lulu, Grayson is a submissive (yes, he wears a corset), so they are able to work things out to their mutual satisfaction, and we go along for the ride.

This book was so engaging and entertaining, I bought another in the series.

Mischief and the Masters

I like Cherise Sinclair, but I feel she has run out of gas with this one. All the other subs have been paired off with Masters, with only Uzuri left. Sinclair tried to make her attractive, but she just wasn’t funny. The backstory of a stalker was boring and better done with previous subs. He wasn’t scary and Uzuri was just annoying. I get the sense that there won’t be any more Shadowlands stories, unless Sinclair gives us Holt’s story. He’s the only Master who isn’t married. I don’t know who he is going to marry because we have run out of subs.

Even the sex scenes seem tired and repetitive.
