Reservation Blues

Sherman Alexie

6159

Once upon a time, Robert Johnson happens upon Big Mama at her home on the reservation. He gives his guitar to a passing Indian and stays with Big Mama to learn to play the harmonica instead.

The recipient of his guitar teams up with two other Indian instrumentalists and two female vocalists, name themselves Coyote Springs, and set out to carve a place for themselves in music performance.

Of course nothing turns out right for them, but this funny and sad parody/magic realism story turns out right for the reader.
